Ready for storm season
The annual test closing marks that Rijkswaterstaat is ready for the coming storm season. The Europoort barrier protects 2 million inhabitants of Rotterdam and the surrounding area from storm floods of the North Sea. The test closing is meant to show possible technical or operational problems, so these can be solved before the storm season starts (October 1st – April 15th).

Saturday September 9th 2016 Maeslant storm surge barrier and Hartel barrier (together named Europoort barrier) close their gates during the annual test closure. The whole day will be filled with organised tours and activities for the children. The start of the test closing is expected at 16:50. This time can vary due to changes in the weather. The test closure is a public event.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Maeslant barrier.

We are going to celebrate this with music. From  2pm onwards you can expect a choir, brassband and singer on the square outside the Keringhuis before the barrier starts the closing procedure at 16.50 hrs.
